It seems somehow inappropriate to speak of things other than the current events within the city. I have kept my silence until now in respect to these more important matters.

[Sure, she's dealt with big bugs before but those weren't connected to witches. Just to a god. Or a demon, however you chose to see him.]

However, I am not used to fighting without a partner. While my partners at home are not similar to Weapons, they are an indispensable part of my fighting style. I had taken this for granted perhaps and had not theorized on my fighting ability without their assistance.

On some level, I feel I must apologize for my lack of preparation. Yet I do understand this was not something I could be prepared for. And while I should like to aid with rescue attempts, I cannot reconcile my lack of ability and the possible danger I might bring to my fellow rescuers if I were to come. I conjecture that this is the advice my own Master would have given me as well.

[The teenager opens her mouth a little to say something else, then she merely nods.]

Forgive me for selfish actions and words in times of need such as these. I can only offer hope that I may be more befitting of the role of a Summoner in future times of need.

No one is prepared when they come to this world, not by, as is colloquially known, as "a long shot." We are brought only knowing what it is that we know of from our own worlds when we were thrust into this unknown world where the rules of nature are quite different.

There are people that had different abilities and possessions that could have been used as weapons, as it seemed that you also once possessed, but were given something else in turn, to fit this world.

That being said, I think I should still say that there would not have been enough training for a recent arrival such as yourself, in order to prepare for the reality of how dangerous all of this can be, especially with an assault against the witches themselves. I would wager that time would have been an advantage you could have taken if this were to have happened in a month or two, but it is not -- it is now. Or at least tomorrow.

Even though you feel like you might be in the way if you were to participate, you could help in several other different capacities, I am sure, so pray do not despair.

I appreciate your words. You are very correct, there was not enough time. In theory, a Summoner must be prepared for all unusual occurrences... but some things are even beyond our scope, I conjecture.

There is no need to apologize. Whether one chooses to fight or stay behind is up to the person, no matter what the reason.

The fact that you are aware of your weaknesses and stepping back because of it is actually quite admirable. It shows a level head and ability to recognize what is best for the group and mission as a whole, which is far more valuable than one who goes in with reckless disregard. I can safely say that these are signs that through future training you will make an excellent Meister.

And as was said before me, there are other ways that you can help, especially once we have returned with the rescued victims. Every little thing, even moral support, is important.

[Nagi visibly flusters at this subtle bit of praise, tugging at a hair curl briefly.]

Thank you. One would think I would be more aware of such extra needs as well. Though my experience with aiding as moral support is limited, it is an important component in any time of crisis.

I am afraid I often allow ideas of what is expected of me to cloud such memory of importance, however. I do appreciate the reminder, as well as the suggestion of aid I might render.

I am glad to answer what questions I may.

You mentioned something about being a "Summoner"? What do you mean by that exactly?

Summoners are individuals who can summon demons that we have made contracts or pacts with. I conjecture that it is somewhat like the relationship between Meister and Weapon. A Summoner's demons will utilize their abilities at the Summoner's request and draw their power from the Summoner themselves.

That's actually rather fascinating. I've heard of a few others with similar abilities from their world so I was curious.

However, isn't it also dangerous to use demons?

If one is not to the level of the demon, I theorize it may be. And some demons are naturally more dangerous than others.

I have never found them dangerous however.

I am unsure as to why. I have never had reason to fear them or find them dangerous.

Hm... [small shrug.] Whatever the reason, I think that may be a good thing—so long as you remain cautious of course.

What would you have to fight against that would require the aid of demons?

I am simply theorizing upon the similarity in relationships.

... In such times, it is typical for one Summoner to come to the aid of another. Particularly if that one is the Capital's Summoner.

I should like to prove my worth and be of aid. However, a Summoner is in theory only as good as their demons. I am unused to combat without the aid of my demons.

I fear and conjecture that I may only prove more burden than useful assistance in my current state.

*She has no idea how accurate calling him a demon really is. Sort of.* Perhaps once I return with Raidou, I could train with you so you would work on your resonance and master it so you are ready once you have a proper Weapon.

[She pauses a moment, then blinks.]

You've nothing to apologize for. The very fact that you have skills that might become useful makes you far more of a help than some.

If I were you, I'd take advantage of my situation to relax; as you've said, there will be other times for you to aid the city.

Relaxation in such a situation seems difficult at best, I would theorize.

One gets used to it eventually. I realize it's not ideal, but it's good for your well-being!

[She's a Summoner so she really ought to know this without it being told to her. Unfortunately, she's also a Summoner from a very small and chiefly peaceful down... well, save recent occurrences.]

Combat? Yes, of course. It's a war, after all, and the Witches have no qualms about attacking and capturing even those who have chosen not to be soldiers.
