If you need help finding your way around the city, I'm part of the Death City Watch.

Aaand what's the Death City Watch? Besides really morbid-sounding.

This city is called Death City...um, you get used to all the death-related names after being here for a while. The Watch protects the citizens here and helps to fight in the war.

[Although she's explaining things fairly formally and politely, a hint of pride comes through as she adds,]

...I'm the youngest member.

[he's kind of hesitant in saying it, because she sounds pleased to be doing it and he knows kids never want to be told they're too little to do something, but. ack.]

I mean, wouldn't you rather leave the fighting to the grown-ups? It's their stupid war, and it doesn't sound very fun to me, y'know?

I've got one of the best Meister abilities for fighting, though, and my father raised me to always do my best. Sitting back and leaving the fight to the adults isn't doing my best.

Heh, well... I think most parents usually mean that in terms of school and all that. I mean, it's great if you can defend yourself! But wouldn't you rather just hang out with your friends and play games and stuff? Kid stuff?

Oh, no...my father wants me to train hard, not just do well in school. I come from a clan with its own fighting style and my father is a master of it. He's been teaching me since I was a toddler.

[She can't even remember a time that she wasn't learning how to fight. She began learning to fight as soon as she could walk without falling over clumsily.]

All of my friends in the city are at least fourteen years old and a lot of them are older than that.

That's, uh....wow. Impressive. But I bet that means the older kids would be really impressed, too. It's not that they're just not letting you play with them, right?

Oh, you don't need to worry, mister. I've played basketball with some of them before. I just usually train with them instead. I like training and I want to be able to protect the city and help people.

That's...great. Just, well...you don't ever feel like you're missing out? Getting to just play and be happy while the adults worry about all the dangerous and boring stuff?

[What is this concept of playing that you refer to, Jack? Hanabi hasn't done much of that for years.]

I'm happier knowing that I'm going to be strong enough to lead the clan after my father. I...used to not even know what to do with a day off from training when my father told me to take one.

Goofing off! Playing games! You said you'd played basketball, what about other sports? Or snowball fights and sledding, if it ever snows enough here for anything like that. Please say it does. Board games, video games? Drawing? Just...spending time with friends?

[Hanabi is far too conscientious to goof off. In fact, she has to be told to take a day off when she's sick and actually needs the rest./small>]

Well, I like swimming...and we don't have video games where I come from. I have played ninja hide and seek, though. It's kind of training but also a game.

"Ninja" hide and seek?

[There's a ghost of a smile as she talks about the game.]

It's a lot like normal hide and seek, except you can throw blunt wooden shuriken at the people you're trying to catch, or set non-dangerous traps for them like a net under some leaves. It's a game to teach Academy students how to sneak around and hide properly and how to avoid traps.
