The first step is to stop dwelling on the past. It doesn't particularly matter where the lion's share of the blame lies as the entire debacle is in the past.

Stop harping on it and instead focus on moving forward. Other people's opinions of you cannot be changed without their deciding to, but you can make yourself a better person. It will take time and actual effort, but if you sincerely desire to make a new image for yourself you can repair the damage and be marginally less of an insufferable douchebag.

That's the million dollar question, isn't it? Insecurities when it comes to self identity and the discovery of one's true purpose are insanely common, so at the very least you aren't the first to grapple with this issue.

It's a many layered problem whose solution varies from person to person and can only come from within. While others may be able to advise on activities that can help the excavation of who you actually are underneath the garbage heap of hero worship, it's ultimately up to you to find what feels right.

Something small that you could begin with is to stop basing your decisions off what you believe your ancestor would do. It seems trivial but can eventually lead to large repercussions.
