Have also wondered... How should it have worked? Aranea said world--our world. Was corrupted.

Aranea, her friends, and that world at large were far too peaceful. They were on the opposite side of the spectrum in comparison to our Alternia. From what I have gathered about the game they played, it requires a degree of battle prowess and the ability to make hard and potentially lethal decisions. Aranea and her teammates did not have these qualities and, I suppose, could not complete the tasks in time.
Karkat and the others won, so I assume that what they did is closer to how it should have been played out. However... I wonder what the true cost of that victory was.

But. Because of self, younger trolls were left alone, and she lost hold on lusus. Because of Rosa, you survived; because of Dii, your ideas did. And because of you, trolls who came after knew better way was possible.
