I've been thinking, lately, about something I experienced back in the place where I was born..

If you could meet yourself as a child…

Would she/he be proud of you?

What kind of excuse would you say to excuse the things you've done or the person you've become?

Yes. The regent's granddaughter couldn't be without a specific purpose, you know.

They have far more choices than to be 'great.' [ Coming from a jaded young human who's pretty sure she's seen what power can do to make a man very much insane, instead. A few times over, if once wasn't enough. ]

Complacency doesn't really qualify the greatness of a leader. Just the meek minds of people who don't dare to challenge him to be great.

A pariah is something of an outcast - though it only made me stronger in making decisions for myself, so you shouldn't feel sad about it. I don't anymore.

[ There's a small pause, after that, and a chuckle follows. ]

I had plenty of time for that, after Romdeau fell, and I've been engaging in a good amount here when I am not working.

In some ways I never really changed. Grew up too fast, I suppose.

One of the Millennium Items. Put simply, they're magnificent tools to posses if you desire power and the ability to mess with people's souls. [That is, if trying to wield one didn't kill you first.]

Honestly? Not really. Even I have one or two. But I recognise that it's a waste of time to regret anything. More useless than wishing, because it's wishing to change something already in the past.

You don't think your younger self would be impressed that you struck out on your own?

It's... strangely debatable. I wonder if I wasn't created to set in motion the events that caused Romdeau's fall or if... they created me to find another life source for the dome but underestimated what my curiosity might find.

No. She was highly dependent and trusting of those around her for no reason. Of course, she didn't know the things I'd found, by the end of it all, so I suppose I can't blame her. Childhood naiveté, and all of that.

That seems to be a common factor for some that come here - usually those who have been through a war before. Teenagers that act much older than their actual ages, the lot.

But it does take a certain type of person to be out in the field and fighting a war, even here, I suppose.

The word carries different connotations for us, it seems. [unsurprising. the short-lived never really could comprehend the fact that there were those that just existed on a completely different level.

Very true. And considering that I've already stumbled into the role of an unwanted font of information for the citizens here I don't see why I should shy away from it when it comes to a much more pressing matter.

The answer will also depend on what point in time the child comes from. A nine-year-old is nine, after all, for a full year. Anything can happen within that time frame.
