So, this device is a means of conveying instantaneous information? I had heard such tales as possible, but could never scarce believe I would see such a marvel. Aside from Marach’s toad, surely.

[Her eyes narrow a bit and she begins talking into it as though it were a horn.]

Ah… if any should hear this, I would like for you to respond in kind. Though I have no reason to doubt the veracity of my guide’s claims, it would be very much to my benefit to bear witness to this marvel’s ability to transmit another’s visage. Surely were such a means common in Ivalice, the stratagems of the battlefield would greatly benefit.

When wars are serious enough, governments have the right to conscript their citizens. In some countries here, like Switzerland, every person is required to serve time in the military.

I suppose this is enough of an emergency to them.

That was partly a lie. I know plenty about military history and the rise and fall of knights.

Don't know why it's a pity though.

It would mean that your kingdom grew disparate from those held to a greater standard and virtue and leadership.

I would not know to what a soldier would know to aspire to.

That would be wrong. The world went from being ruled by the elite to being ruled by the masses. As more power went to the common citizen, both in terms of weapons and politics, knights became outdated.

Soldiers all fight for different things. You'd have to ask each one individually.

But the common masses need leadership and direction lest they become consumed by their base desires.

They elect their own leaders now. It's worked for over two hundred years now and I think it'll keep working. Put a little more faith in your fellow human.

Perhaps your days have granted you vision to believe thus. As for myself I have seen the debauchery of man from the lowest caste to the highest. Even the most esteemed church can be built on nothing but falsehood and bloodshed.

I have little faith in these ideals, ser. I only believe in the merit born from one's own acts.

I don't believe one man should unaccountably rule another. I've been there and it wasn't great.
