[Spirit appears, fixing the camera angle, zooming in and out of his somewhat dirty and dusty self. It's smudged brown in a corner and he scrapes it off with an equally dirty fingernail, whispering something to an unseen man next to him.]

You sure this is secure only to our agents? [There's a 'Yes, sir!' and Spirit nods, and clears his throat.]

Our scouts tracked down the witches to their new hide out, where they've taken our people. It's the... Grand Canyon, in one of the cave networks there. The scouts reported that the prisoners are alive for now, but they can't get into the caves to check what's going on in there.

[deep breath] We're launching a rescue mission on the fifth -- the day after tomorrow. That's the shortest time we can be underway, because our scouts have to set up our transportation mirror there and we need to recover here. Sign up with the guys if you want to come -- we'll take unpartnered fighters, too, as long as you promise not to take on kishin egg on your own in case there are any.

And... [hesitates for a moment, and then reluctantly:] The witches didn't just come here to pick up random people. They were specifically targeting the Meisters and Weapons among us, but we don't know why yet. Be triple careful in the mission, all right?

They were also after our witch prisoner, who's been giving us some tips on her sisters' activity. Cybele gave us the info on the transmitters in Europe that last time, among other things. Seems the witches weren't happy with how we ruined their big project and we barely managed to save her from, well, death. [shrugs, as if he deals with witch assassinations all the time. Actually, he does.] She's pretty much on our side now after what they tried to do, so don't be too surprised if a lion lady takes a walk around town once in a while. Don't worry, we're keeping a good lock down on her magic until we're sure she can be trusted. [tiredly] Not the first time we've had witches on our side, at least...

[clears his throat] A bunch of us guys are still trying to identify and bury the undead. We've dragged the whole lot of them to the southeast side of the city to keep the smell away, though. Uuh, just don't wander over there for a few days.

Our movie will have to wait a few more days. How are you... doing?

[Excellent! Spirit grins, his one actual cheerful one today, and raises two fingers.]

No uniforms. And no lines, all right. And don't try to fix the landscape, the Grand Canyon's a historical landmark.

Despite its formation, I wouldn't even consider trying to change the Grand Canyon.

[even if it would look better.

but do you really have to cut the uniforms and lines?]

[yes.]

Good. That's all good. Black*Star will be there, too. Kilik... was taken, but I'm sure he's all right.

[meanie.]

I'm sure he's fine.

[though that does make him wonder.]

What's the plan for everyone so far?

[salute] The cave network they're using seems to have only one entrance so far, so we have no choice but to go through it.

And from there?

In order of priority: rescue our people and agents, destroy their machines or recover what we can of their plans, and execute the witches.

[mulls over it.]

That's a lot for one mission, but there isn't much choice. Doing it all at once is the only way.

Place me wherever you think it best.

I'll be happy if we manage the first one as effectively as possible.

[Heh.] In front, of course.

[can't help but smile at that.]

In that case, perhaps I should take the lead on the actual rescue efforts.

I'll leave it up to you, then. [grin]

Once the victims have been taken out, that would also leave the rest to attack in full force.

I would stay to help, but I'll watch over the group and lead them back to Death City to make sure they return safely.

[nod] Sounds like a good plan.

Stein and I will take care of the witches.

I'm sure you'll make quick work of them.

[chuckle] Between you and Black*Star, we have all the extra firepower we need. But I won't forget, boss.

I guess letting him go all out would actually be the best course of action this time around.

For once. He's turning out into a reliable kid, isn't he?

He's always been reliable, really. [it's his personality that could use work.]

True enough. He's come a pretty long way from when you beat the crap out of his ass outside the school that one time. Stein told me about it.

Technically I've beaten him twice [if you want to include the time they first met.] but yes he has. We all have.

[small laugh] We adults have made you kids grow up too fast, haven't we?

[small smile.]

It just comes with the business of protecting and maintaining the order of the world.

[His throat closes up for a moment before he chokes his words out again.]

You're doing a good job of it, if I do say so myself. Everything will be all right.

[don't cry, Spirit. Kid still has yet to learn his father's ways of dealing with you like that.

but he's also a little touched by the words all the same.]

Thanks. It's... [a small breath.] taken some time. But I only have everyone to thank for their continual support.
