[For anyone that happens to know Kotetsu, you might be a little surprised at the serious, almost stern features on his face. He almost looks as if he has something dire and important to say, and in fact, he does. He opens his mouth-- and then closes it, his eyes going wide slightly, and he stares down at his feet as if trying to recall what he was going to say.
Damn it, public speaking wasn't ever his strong point, but Barnaby had taken care of the first message relating to this subject so it was only fair that he'd handle it this time around. Finally, with an assured nod, he lifts his head up.]
Okay, I'd like to have everyone's attention please! I know a lot of people probably know more than enough about those killings going around, and if you haven't, get outta that rock and read yourself a newspaper. It's good for you. I'm not sure how many of you remember the message someone named Barnaby gave about this "serial killer" in the area, but it's related to that.
[Kotetsu takes a deep breath and removes his hat, his expression going serious again.]
They're calling the guy that everyone is looking for "The Crim Cutter". But that's not his name. His name is Lunatic. He's from my world, and from the looks of it, he's now in Death City. Back home, he was famous for going after criminals and giving them his own brand of justice, and that was by killing them. No one knows what he really looks like because he wears a mask and an outfit, and no one knows how to catch him. Not yet at least. He's never gone after regular, innocent people though, so there isn't too much to worry about. Still, he's dangerous, and he shouldn't be here. We can't let him stay loose for long.
...some people might think that he's not that bad of a problem because he goes after criminals, people who you think deserves this sort of thing, but that's not true. It's a lie. No matter who he goes after and why, he's killing people, and no matter what, that sort of thing can't be forgiven. You don't get any kind of justice with murder. It's not right!
[He doesn't realize the tightened hold he has on his mirror or the raised tone in his voice until he hears it slightly echo in the room he's in, and Kotetsu jolts slightly, surprised at his own outburst. Calming down, he rubs at the back of his neck and continues.]
Ah, so, if anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to ask me or my partner. --oh, my name's Kotetsu. My partner's Barnaby. We've dealt with this guy a lot longer than Death City has now so hopefully, we can help out in catching Lunatic and getting this all to stop as soon as possible, because trust me, he's not gonna stop for anything.

Crava-- Oh, the frilly thing! You mean Edgeworth! Well yeah, I wouldn't be surprised that he'd wanna try to get involved in this but I don't get how that'd make things go on longer. He's kinda head of the agency or something so I'm guessing he's good at what he does? Usually that just makes things go along faster instead if slower.
[Kotetsu raises an eyebrow.] Okay, so people have the potential to lie too. I know what you're getting at. Just because someone might either be putting up a front about the kind of person they are or just haven't tried doing anything bad doesn't mean I'm gonna think of them any differently. The less you trust in people then the easier it is for you to suspect that kind of thing, and that's just not fair. You can have all the incentive to do anything you want, but once it actually affects other people in a negative way then that's kinda where I personally draw the line.
[Look at Katsuragi Yako's detective agency. (Because Sai is still of the opinion that Yako never actually contributed anything useful to it.)]
Will it still be 'not fair' when someone you trust stabs you in the back with a knife? [He smiles.]
It'll be too late if you wait till they actually do something that affects others.
[And Kotetsu was never the type to simply go along with anything just because of a few written rules or laws or simple expectations. Sure, he was all about abiding to certain guidelines, but the second it drifted off into territory he didn't agree with, Kotetsu would dig his heels into the ground in order to keep from having to follow along with it.]
But then sometimes having a position like that takes more than just luck. [Even if he didn't have very good opinions of most people in any sort of authoritative position, not unless they proved themselves actually competent and caring.
Kotetsu rubs at his neck, a little confused as to what exactly this person seems to want to accomplish in his whole "all people are secretly bad so your trust is worthless" deal. It really does annoy him.] It'll hurt, and not just because I'd be getting stabbed, especially if you mean literally, but I don't think that's something anyone can always be prepared for, and it's not something you should just always expect either. Do you really think it's worth it to go around living your life being suspicious of every single person you meet? One bad apple doesn't ruin the whole bunch. You need to have more faith in people than that.
Positions mean nothing if you don't have the natural ability to protect that position. A weak head only means that someone will come in and drag them off by force.
[If Sai has managed to annoy Kotetsu, he's accomplished what he set out to do.]
Don't you know that mould on fruit can spread? If you have an apple covered in mould and you don't remove it, or you never notice it was there, all your apples will be ruined too.
Except people aren't apples. You expect them to just sit still and allow something like that to happen but you'll always have someone that's just not gonna take it. As long as you take care of the source, then the rest are fine, and if there's the chance that things don't go that perfectly, well then you've just gotta work faster and harder at fixing the problem.
[Kotetsu directs his doubtful gaze on Sai and arches an eyebrow.] Surprisingly enough, people can be really resilient when it matters, or do you just believe that's a load of garbage too?
Sai would be very sad if he heard what he was saying being called excuses. He'd hung around people enough in his various guises that he considered himself pretty good with things like the evils of the human heart. It also didn't help that his father was pretty much evil incarnate. But unlike Kotetsu, he does listen till the end, and very closely as well. Although his shrug and laugh wouldn't make most people think that he had been listening at all.]
Don't talk about 'people' like I'm not a person.
And I know they're resilient. [He was still dealing with that annoyingly resilient person even now.]
And I wasn't implying that you weren't a person. I was just saying 'people', like in general. You know, like an example. But as long as you actually get the main picture, then that's fine with me. Be as pessimistic as you want about others, but it's hard to expect that sort of thing as a default when there's always exceptions.
Of course there isn't.]
I'm just being realistic. You're the one who's being too optimistic.
There's nothing wrong with being too optimistic! I'd rather be that than some dreary old man expecting the worst.
Because you'll never get the chance to grow old?
[Pause.]
Older?
Uh, yeah. Older. I'm pretty sure I've got a lot of useful years ahead of me but then, that's probably still the optimism talking. If not useful then at least it'll be a not too boring vacation life toward the end. Something with a nice futon and good food and some alcohol.
[Sai does laugh, because that's pretty much exactly what he's expecting to happen to the optimistic Kotetsu. Unless some kind of freak stroke of good luck saves him.]
It's definitely the optimism talking.
I'm the only person that knows what'll happen to me in the future, and I've got no reason to believe anything will turn out that badly. That's just what I think.
Then guess who still has no idea what a clairvoyant is. Hint: this person right here.]
Uh... m-maybe?
[Otherwise, no one will believe that you can~]
[Suddenly, his smile drops.]
.....You're not lying to me, are you?
I'll have to decline that idea. Thanks, but no thanks.
