Some information has come into my hands that I'm curious about and I was hoping one of you could enlighten me on this subject. Multiple answers are not only fine but also encouraged because there's no such thing as too much information.

I assume my question is simple, however I'm still unaware of minor details in troll culture so it could be more complicated than I'd imagined.

What's a "moirail"?

And on a second note, I've worked out a more effective sopor substitute. However, I'd like opinions on what you believe the best method would be to apply it. Via a sort of reuseable patch, a type of lotion or merely a container with strong enough fumes to be effective or any other ideas you may have.

It's a romantic partner of sorts. From what I have learned humans only commit themselves to one partner, but trolls have four stemming from our quadrant system.

I'd be happy to. This is a chart depicting our quadrant system which is divided into red romance and black romance, serving positive and negative--so to speak--emotions. Then it is also divided into their societal function, concupiscent and conciliatory.

A moirail is what your call your partner who falls into [She points to the diamond] pale quadrant, also known as moirallegiance. It is a red partner and falls into the conciliatory side of things.

Troll romance carries the connotation of multiple partnerships. It is split into four distinct quadrants represented 8y symbols that the Disciple has mentions. Firstly, we have the Red romance that is comprised of the Flushed Quadrant and the Pale Quadrant. (The pale quadrant 8eing what Moirail falls under). These two quadrants are strongly rooted in positive emotions. Then there is Black romance which is split into the Caliginous and Ashen quadrants. This two are rooted in strong negative emotions for one another.

The official terminology that is tossed around for Red romance is Matespritship for Flushed, and Moirallegiance for Pale. The quadrant that you've specifically asked for information on is usually a guardianship that is extremely necessary for High8loods. Typically they will 8ecome pale with Midbloods or lower because they make the best Moirails. They are a8le to console the feelings of rage and keep the High8lood partner in line. This consolation of rage and violence may 8e more essential for some High8loods than others. The relationship is thought of to 8e strictly platonic given the nature of how trolls 8reed on our planet. Palemates are often seen spending quality time together, getting to know each other, and often engaging in very close-knit friendship. That isn't what is important, namely. The friendship part is merely a 8onus. Having someone around that understands you much better than anyone else is something most long for, no?

The purpose of this quadrant serves is to keep the viciously violent nature of the High8lood in check, in a very positive way. These two will essentially 8alance each other. That doesn't got to say that their strongly positive feelings are null and void, 8ut they help in motivation to keep the Palemates together.

As a side note regarding the sopor, I do 8elieve some sort of lotion or container with a strong aroma may 8est.

How does a troll normally go about choosing a moirail?

And as of right now the substitute is simply a container with a strong aroma, I'm just wondering if anyone has any better ideas they'd like to see developed.

Well, I can't say for sure as I've never had one. 8ut knowing enough a8out our race, I'd say that it is not about choosing. Any quadrant can 8e filled based on what those two trolls particularly feel at the time. I assume that humans confess their feelings much the same way we do. We ask or it simply becomes an expressively agreed on sort of thing.

The 8est example I can give is that I never expressively asked Dualscar to 8e my Ashen Quadrant. As it were, he is a military official and I am a pir8. We have had many run ins where his cunning can match my ingenuity. We present such a challenge to one another that our rivalry developed naturally. I consider him to 8e my equal and for that reason I keep him around.

Anyway, if you are feeling particularly close to a troll, any troll, that you feel you have a grasp on that no one else seems to have, or that your positive interactions between each other seem to balance out the volatile nature in both of you. . .You may have a palemate without even knowing it. And that's a good thing.~

Hm, well this is sort of inventive in a way, 8ut if you could figure out how to mix this substitue with a detergent trolls could essentially wash their 8edding in it and then it'll have the smell along with the feeling of sleeping within the sopor. This way it is does not need to be replenished as often and helps with the adjustment into this planet's sleep schedule. Whenever the troll is in 8ed they will be compelled to sleep and thus this can regulate their schedules to function during daylight if they choose to.

Would you say it's common for a troll to just automatically assume before any sort of discussion would be held over it?

And that's one idea, but that would require making it so it's activated by water and not diluted by it. A thought to keep in mind for experimental purposes, but not anything I'd get to soon I don't think.

I know the inside of a troll better than I know anything about your systems of romance. It seems like it's what I was doing before, so I can't say that I would be opposed to the idea. Merely unsure of it being considered a romantic gesture. I tend to avoid romance on a human standpoint as it's not my strong suit, I didn't expect to get mixed up in it on an alien level.

By strict definition from what I've been told here, I've had someone that fits the definition of a moirail however humans don't view it as such and therefore it doesn't count as falling under that classification. Though that also helps explain why she's never liked him being around before, however I can't say for certain that was the reason. It could have just been that he was annoying.

I used data from both Sollux and Condesce as a means of improving it, so it should be a well enough medium between low and high bloods. You can try it out, and if it's too strong for you I'll see what I can do.

They forget to mention the blanket of protection that accompanies being mated wwith a high blood.

Loww bloods are often culled wwithout second thought, but a loww blood is less likely to be culled if it's a ranking troll's pale mate.

Should I take on a pale mate, no one in their right mind wwould dare touch them. Perhaps another vviolet blood wwith a cracked think pan, but they wwould meet a painful death by my hands.

Of course, if I chose to cull a navvy blood's moirail, nothing could be said on the matter.

I know full what what it is I'm getting myself into, at least I do now. It wasn't a conscious act on my part, I simply put down the authority she had to follow and she slowly began to warm up to me. Without whatever powers she presumably had in your world, she's rather easy to manage for someone like myself. And once you get used to her, not half bad company either.
