But since Genesis is bedridden in the Horrorspital due to his extensive injuries, people are very free to go bother him in person. In all these messages, Genesis sounds confident yet strained, as if clearly enduring intense pain with a calm face.]

Just so you are all made aware, during the mission in San Jose, my partner and I faced off against a witch after a battle against a terribly strong kishin egg. I protected him. And because of that, I sustained terrible injuries to my entire torso, as well as my right shoulder and arm. I think this has been the worst I've experienced throughout my stay here in Death City.

Not to worry, though. I don't intend to stay here long. Expect me to return to the field in a week or two. Meanwhile, Fabiola-- if you are well, please act in my stead on the field and report to me in person daily. Neji-- thank you for your hard work watching over my Zone while I was away.

Ah, and before I forget-- if there is a clerk free to coordinate with me while I am here in the clinic, I would gladly appreciate the assistance with my duties as a liaison to the Detective Agency.

He actually got angry at me the first time I took a blow for him. I really didn't think much of it. I think it's very likely that he will give me a harsh talking to about this... I'm pretty surprised you assumed he would, too.

You're speaking from experience, aren't you?

[There's a brief, sheepish laugh on the other end.]

Yeah, you could say that I've got a hefty amount of experience. No shortage of it here!

And from who, may I ask?

Lot of people, actually... hah. But, Bunny always seems to do it the best.

[A brief pause.] My wife did too.

Your wife... was she left behind in your world?

[It's a little upsetting, imagining a family torn like that by BREW.]

Hey, don't worry about it. It was years ago. Nothing that really needs to be talked about. [Mostly because Kotetsu doesn't particularly like talking about it to begin with.]

[Genesis laughs, but it really hurts, so it's weak and dies down quickly. He sighs. He truly hates how this injury had crippled him, and furthermore, how the way BREW changed him also changed the way he healed. But at least he wasn't at risk for blood loss like when his degradation started.]

I was just kidding, Kotetsu.

That's a shitty joke. 'ch! [Too bad it's difficult for him to be so peeved when he can obviously hear how fatigued Genesis still is. As they say, laughter is the best medicine, but it doesn't work as well when it just tires you out even more.]

I'm just the kind of person that needs a good ol' verbal push once in a while. Nothing wrong with that.

[Genesis takes a breath, calming down the waves of pain he could feel coursing through his body.]

[For a moment Kotetsu's confused if Genesis is saying that from experience or it happens to be meant as a personal jab, but seeing as talking about both his deceased wife and his partner who still kinda hates him makes him terribly uncomfortable, he just decides to forget the whole thing.]

That's not to say that I don't listen all the time. I do! Especially when it comes to the important things.

I'm certain you do. I don't think you'd be a Zone Leader if you didn't.

Exactly! Besides, having an old man like me in that kinda rank is good for the rest of the kids around here. Gives 'em a good example to go by. [Or more like an example of what not to do.]

Hm, I'd have to agree with that. You aren't the only old man in the Watch, though.

If I had a card I'd show it to ya, but that's not how we work. The city I live in has Heroes, and we stop crime right in its path. I've been doing it for over ten years and you're not going to find a better pro at it than me. ...well, except for Mr. Legend. He's number one, but you can consider me an honorable number two!

[He blinks at him.]

The first time we met, you said you were just a part of law enforcement. So this is what was "too complicated" for you to explain.

Yup, that's exactly what the big complicated secret was. I'm not supposed to tell anyone because that's just part of how it works. Heroes stay as Heroes in the public eye, and when we're not Heroes, we're just regular people. Things are easier that way, not just for ourselves but anyone we know, like family and friends.

[A short pause.] Bunny's a Hero too, but he did things a lot differently. He was a show-off that way.

I see... what exactly did he do that was different?

Bunny never had a Hero identity, he just went by his normal name, so that kinda made him both things in the public, a Hero and a civilian. 'course, people knew him better as a flashy Hero. Made him really popular, since no one'd ever really done that before. ...and then of course there was the whole "young and good-looking" thing. I'll tell ya, our boss took advantage of it like crazy. Interviews, photoshoots, newspaper and magazine ads, billboards, he did a lot of things!

Mm... I see. You said you were a veteran. Did you ever go through such a phase when you first became a hero?
